The inter-club match was specially arranged to mark the Bass Rock GC Sesquicentennial. The Castle assembled a strong team to complete in the ‘Grand Match’ on Sunday 31 July 2023 over the fine West Links, North Berwick. The day was a memorable occasion for both historic clubs where 80 players assembled 150 years on from the formation of Bass Rock GC.
The 18-hole match was played as a fourball, better ball format with overall holes up deciding the final result, despite our best efforts the Bass Rock GC secured a comfortable win and lifted the Jim Taylor Cup, a fitting outcome on such a special occasion.
The annual inter-club match between the Castle and Bass Rock remains one of the highlights on our fixture list, the match itself being one of the oldest, if not the oldest inter-club match in the world dating back to 1896.
The Bass Rock has played a significant part in the history of golf in the County over the past 150 years and the Castle Captain took the opportunity to congratulate them on reaching this significant milestone. To mark the special occasion the Captain presented the Bass Rock GC with a unique 4” bronze medal of Old Tom and Young Tom Morris which was very well received.
The players enjoyed the comradery and the usual kind hospitality that the historic fixture has to offer, many staying on for drinks and merriment before departing late in the afternoon. We look forward to welcoming Bass Rock GC to Gullane next season for the return fixture.
